The Institute of English was established in 1962 as part of a programme for improving existing standards of teaching of English in schools and colleges. Two one-year courses were started, one for the Diploma in English for School teachers and the other Diploma in English for third class post graduates to improve their qualification. The M.A. course in English Language and Literature was started in 1964, and in 1965 a part-time M.A. English evening course was started. In 1972, the evening course was discontinued and in 1973 the Diploma Course in the Teaching of English was also discontinued. In 1982, the PG Diploma in English for Communication was started as an evening course. The full-time regular M.A. course with greater facilities for research continued. With the introduction of the M.Phil course in 1978, the Institute became the nerve centre of research in English Language and Literature in Kerala. It is recognized today as a leading institution not only in Kerala but also at the national level.
The aim of the Post Graduate Diploma in English for Communication (PGDEC) programme is to help you gain confidence in speaking English and attain accuracy in using English in social, professional and academic contexts. The sessions will be structured around various functions for which English is used. The classes will be activity oriented, and you will be required to speak in pairs and groups often. We will not discuss grammar rules much, but you will acquire these rules by using English in the class while performing various language activities. One becomes skilled in a language only by practicing it, and therefore it is important to attend classes regularly.
In addition to attending classes regularly, you should also read and listen to English on a regular basis. Read books and listen to programmes you understand and enjoy. Links to several web resources for learning English are provided for you. In the class and outside, make use of every opportunity to talk to others in English. Your speaking skills will improve rapidly when you do this!
